Coir Board organises North East Coir Expo Awareness Programme


Coir Board of India organised North East Coir Expo Awareness Programme at Cotton University here today. The event was organised to promote the use and re-use of coir in Assam. In the programme, the coir artisans demonstrated how coconut husk or coir could be recycled into various goods such as door mats, ropes, toys and more which could be used in our day-today lives and are environment friendly at the same time.

Addressing the event, MLA Siddhartha Bhattacharya, said that today the coir artisans have showed us how coconut husk could be recycled into valuable goods and if such recycling methods of the coconut husk or coir is carried out in Assam on a larger scale then this will help the people in earning  livelihood for themselves.

Shri P.G. Totkar, Zonal Director East, Coir Board of India, in his speech said that the Coir Board of India has been engaged in the development of coir industry since 1953 and has been working to uplift it since then. The Director also said that the Coir Board has developed a machine through which they can convert coconut husk into fibres and are planning to open training centers in Assam to provide training to the people here on how to do that.

 The event was attended by Prof. Bhabesh Chandra Goswami, Vice Chancellor, Cotton University , Prof. Diganta Kumar Das, Registrar, Cotton University along with  officials and Coir Artisans from all across Assam.
