The Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Vadgam constituency in Gujarat, Jignesh Mevani was arrested late last night, following an alleged provocative tweet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The tweet has been suspended by Twitter now, following legal demands.
MLA Mevani was arrested from a Circuit House in Palanpur at around 11.30 pm yesterday; and next taken to Ahmedabad, from where he was flown to Assam today morning.
Arup Kumar Dey, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from Kokrajhar in the Northeastern state of Assam, had filed a complaint against him. Police followed!
Kokrajhar Superintendent Of Police (SP) Thube Prateek Vijay Kumar has told media, Kokrajhar police arrested Congress Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani from Palanpur Circuit House last night.
Also, MLA from Sivasagar Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC) in Assam and Raijor Chief, Akhil Gogoi had condemned the arrest of the Gujarat MLA. Raijor Dal released a video reaction of Gogoi today.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has otherwise referred that he does not recognise Mevani. Sarma was speaking to reporters in sidelines to an event.
“Assam Police didn’t take any action against people who gave calls for genocide. They didn’t even register my FIR against CM for his hate speech.”, reads a tweet by Barpeta MP Abdul Khaleque today evening.
He adds, “But for Assam Police, asking the PM to appeal for peace and harmony my Jignesh Mevani attracts 153A IPC. Sheer abuse of power!”
