The Batadrava Police Station in Nagaon has been set on fire by a mob on Saturday, after a heated-up situation out of the death of a person in custody who was picked up by police earlier. This follows huge reactions.
Majibur Rahman, Rafiqul Islam, and Anuwar Hussain have been apprehended. The three were accused. Also, Safiqul Islam, a fish trader of the Salnabari area in Batadrava was detained. He had allegedly demanded ₹10,000 bribe, and a duck.
“We’re investigating the allegations. 3 have been detained from among persons who attacked police station. 2 police personnel have been injured in attack”, said SP Leena Doley to the media.
“Actions such as this are unacceptable at any cost, and will not be tolerated. The ones behind this shall be punished strictly. (Sic.)”, said Cabinet Minster Pijush Hazarika to the media persons today.
According to media reports, the family members of the fish trader of Salonabori village claimed that the police had demanded Rs 10,000 and a duck as a bribe for his release, and his wife visited the police station with a duck in the morning.
When she returned with the money later, she learned that her husband had been taken to Nagaon Civil Hospital, adds reports. After reaching there, she found him dead, they claimed. Alleging that the man died because of torture, villagers gheraoed the police station next.
