Nk Brij Bhan a soldier in Indian Army had End Stage Kidney Disease and was on dialysis. In the absence of a kidney donor, he was destined to be boarded out of service. With the future bleak for him financially and medically, he was left with a family with four daughters to look after.
On 01 June there was an alert for a deceased kidney donation from a brain dead patient in Apollo hospital Kolkata. The relatives had consented to donate the organs. Two kidneys were harvested with one kidney being transplanted on 03 June by Command Hospital (Eastern Command) Kolkata.Nk Brij Bhan received this gift of life in the form of the kidney donation. He has now recovered and is no more on dialysis and can lead a normal life continuing his service in the Army.
Over 20 such cases have been conducted at this hospital and this is the third brain dead kidney donation done at Command Hospital (Eastern Command) Kolkata under the leadership of Maj Gen Shivinder Singh,Commandant Command Hospital and the transplant team headed by Col Satish Mendonca and Col Ananya Dutta Head of Nephrology and Urology respectively.
