After day 1 of their Ranji Trophy quarter-final game against Jharkhand. West Bengal score 310/1 in the first quarterfinal of the Ranji Trophy at the Just Cricket Academy Ground on Monday.
Bengal – 1st innings: Abhishek Raman retired hurt 41, Abhimanyu Easwaran 65, Sudip Kumar Gharam (batting) 106, Anustup Majumdar (batting) 85; Extras 13.
Bengal head coach Arun Lal’s quotes post first day’s play:
Very happy with team’s performance. Sudip is a very special player. He’s very unassuming, quite, loveable guy, real team man and I have never heard a complaint from him. To me he’s the future of Bengal criket and among top five fielders in the country right now. He’s a special batsman, got terrific technique and once he finds his confidence he’s going to be a huge thrust going forward for Bengal cricket. He didn’t do well in three games but we still backed him because we believed in his talent.
Raman and Abhimanyu did the real hard work after we lost the toss. The wicket had something in it for the fast bowlers but they batted very well.
The wicket is playing very true. I don’t wanna comment on a wicket before both sides have bowled on it. I wanna see my bowlers bowl on it . It’s a hard wicket with grass, so it should help the fast bowlers.
Anustup is a champion player. I was pretty upset that a player of his calibar didn’t get a hundred in the three matches despite being the highest scorer for us. Now am expecting a double hundred, not only a hundred. I want to bat full day tomorrow, that’s the plan for now.
(On Raman’s injury) I think it’s some sort of back spasm. He was in a bad way, so we kept him out of batting. He recieved treatment, our physio Aditpta worked hard on him. He’s ready to bat tomorrow. It’s a terrific cricket wicket.
Sudip Gharami spoke after his maiden first-class century for Bengal:
Very happy to score my first ton for Bengal. My aim was to play my natural cricket. My team backed me when I went out to bat, Easwaran, Anustup guided me during my innings, helped me understand better what the situation is demanding. I took some time at first, wanted to understand the wicket and then play my shots.
Wicket was good. There was help for the pacers but we batted well to put up a good score, took advantage of the loose balls. Want to give my all and win the trophy for Bengal.
