Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma inspects the site at Lumshnong on Sunday.
Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma tweeted, ” The damages to NH06 in Lumshnong, #EastJaintiaHills District that connects Meghalaya to 3 North Eastern states is extensive & the restoration work is a huge task. Team has been directed to expedite the restoration work of this very crucial road.”
The CM also interacted with truck drivers and assured that restoration of roads will be completed as early as possible. He also assured all assistance to the drivers stranded in the highway at Lumshnong .
Approximately 1000 plus loaded trucks are stranded along both sides of the road, from Assam and Meghalaya. He instructed DC to ensure supply of food items to the stranded people.
The road communication between Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya to three neighbouring States of Assam, Mizoram and Tripura has been disrupted for the past three days due to multiple landslides in Lum Shnong area.
“All efforts are being made to restore the entire damaged portion of the road to ensure accessibility. However, there is a huge challenge, as rain is not stopping. As the rain recedes and the flow of the water is diverted, the affected area can be restored,” the Chief Minister said.
Meghalaya has been hit by intense rain, floods and landslides this year, leaving several people displaced.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui along with officials of district administration and NHAI.
CM Conrad also said that the Government will take some time to assess the extent of damages. He further informed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been apprised of the situation.
