Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal visited the erosion-hit areas of Dibrugarh district on Tuesday. The Union Minister during his inspection interacted with the people ravaged by the erosion. He made enquiries about the losses incurred in wake of the river erosion, caused by the Brahmaputra and Dibru rivers.
The minister visited Pukhurijan, Balijan, Bindhakota Bornamghorstholi, Gereki Nepali and other affected areas. He also discussed with the officials about the corrective measures taken in view of the reported loss of livestock and farm stock in the erosion-hit areas.
Speaking after the visit of the affected areas, the Union Minister said, “To find a pragmatic and sustainable solution to Assam’s flood and erosion woes, the Union Government and the state governments are working together under the dynamic Modi ji. The government is giving leadership of Prime Minister Narendra special emphasis on creating a scientific solution to prevent erosion in the state. Erosion resistant embankment between Guijaan and Maijan is being worked out to prevent any future occurrence of erosion in the area. We believe that this project will bring in much required relief to the people residing by the banks of rivers, especially in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts. I am confident that the financial assistance provided by the Modi government, to the tune of Rs 110 crore to tackle the flood and erosion problems of Dinjan, Pukhurijan, Guijan and other adjoining areas, will bring in much required relief to the people.”
Sonowal was accompanied by Ponakan Baruah, MLA, Chabua, Rituparna Baruah, Chairman, Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC), Subhash Dutta, Vice Chairman, Assam State Housing Board (ASHB) along with the officials of the water resources department.
