Dibrugarh University students enact street play against child labour

Puhoror Obhijatri, a student led community-based organisation on Saturday staged a street play titled “Puhor Prayakhi” in Dibrugarh at the RKB Road and Dibrugarh Town Protection Dyke as part of the 10-day campaign to create awareness against child labour. Students of the Centre for Studies in Journalism and Mass Communication, Dibrugarh University are the main organiser of the campaign that will run from November 19 to November 30.
As per the 2011 census report, the number of working children in the age group of 5-14 years in Assam increased from 99,512 in 2001 to 3,51,416 in 2022. In backdrop of the above facts the students took it upon themselves to champion the social cause and enlighten the society against the ills of child labour through vigorous sensitisation.
“The perpetrators of child labour walks away scotfree as they are not held accountable for their actions. However, with this sensitisation campaign, communities will be awakened about the cardinal role that they need to play to safeguard the future of school going age children. There is hope and confidence that the Puhoror Obhijatri’s campaign against child labour will go a long way in developing conviction in the communities that there is need to ensure that every child goes to school, receives education and not forced to work. It will change the apathy of the people towards child labour violators and it will help in eradicating the vice from the society,” the organisers said.
