BSF, South Bengal Frontier celebrates 9th International Day of Yoga with enthusiasm

(Kolkata)

International Yoga Day is being celebrated all over the world including India on 21 June 2023, on this occasion BSF South Bengal Frontier has organized the yoga at its headquarters on a large scale as well as all Sector Headquarters, Battalion Headquarters and Border Outposts of South Bengal. The jawans also introduced Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam by motivating the villagers and school children living in the border areas for yoga. Remember that this year the theme of Yoga Day is Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.

Under the leadership of Inspector General of South Bengal Frontier, Ayush Mani Tiwari IPS, all the officers and jawans performed yoga together on a large scale. Along with 300 Border Security Force troops, their families also participated in the Yoga program organized at the Frontier Headquarters.

BSF jawans who perform duties on the border of BSF become Yogacharyas and practice yoga alongside their responsibilities.

Since the inception of International Yoga Day, BSF has included yoga as part of its daily physical exercise routine. Consequently, yoga has become an integral part of the Border Security Force’s daily practice. In order to achieve this, BSF has trained approximately 5,000 Yogacharyas (Instructors). After becoming Yogacharyas, these instructors not only teach yoga but also fulfill their duties on the border. This initiative aims to improve the health of all officers and jawans of the Border Security Force deployed to safeguard the International Border, ensuring that they are well-versed in yoga. By incorporating yoga, the mental and physical fitness of the jawans is being adequately maintained. Research has shown that yoga improves sleep quality among security force members, reduces emotions associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) such as anger, anxiety, and depression, and helps alleviate chronic pain.

This year the team of *Heartfulness* is conducting Yoga every week in South Bengal Frontier. Yoga, a form of mindfulness-based mind fitness training that includes aspects of relaxation, meditation and breathing, has been shown to help members of the security forces manage stress, control emotions and improve their ability to focus in chaotic moments.

The Public Relations Officer of South Bengal Frontier stated that on the 9th International Day of Yoga, the jawans facing the challenges related to the borders have made the border people aware of yoga away from the world’s chak chauband. The jawans posted up to the BOP level celebrated the 9th International Day of Yoga with enthusiasm. He also stated that through yoga, the jawans are giving the message of physical cleanliness and stress-free living to themselves as well as to others.

No calamity can dampen the spirit and enthusiasm of BSF towards Yoga. He further stated ‘Vyayamat Labhate Swasthya, Dirghaayusham Paramsukham, Aarogyam Paramam Bhagyam, Swastham Sarvardha Sadhanam’ i.e. Yoga exercise gives us good health.
