Heavy rainfall was witnessed all along North Bengal on night 12 and 13 July 2023 which led to Torsa and Kaljani rivers of Alipur Duar district crossing danger level.
The rapid flow of Kaljani river led to flooding of Mechpara village and washing of the only bridge connecting Mechpara with main highway. Responding promptly to requisition by civil administration, Troops of Kripan Division of Trishakti Corps acted promptly and rushed to the site.
Although the fast flowing waters were posing a huge threat to life, army personnels crossed the river and established rope crossing to facilitate the movement of villagers to safe location. With continuous efforts under the heavy rains, the troops evacuated 72 villagers including 24 children.
Inspite of rising water levels, to make sure that nobody else is stranded inside village, army troops carried out thorough search of village. Six villagers including two children who were trapped inside one of the remotest house were evacuated during the search.
Prompt response from the Indian Army led to successful rescue of the villagers. Indian Army is always ready to provide humanitarian assistance during any disaster situation.
