Tezpur University observed 77th Independence Day with three-day activities starting from August 13 culminating activities of Meri Mati Mera Desh that honours freedom fighters and celebrates many achievements of the nation. The University also organised some activities under Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.
The Independence day’s festivities started with the hoisting of the national flag by Shambhu Nath Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Tezpur University followed by national anthem.
In his address, Singh explained the concept of freedom, which he said is a fundamental and multifaceted notion that lies at the heart of human existence and societal progress. “Freedom is the cornerstone of any democratic society through which diversity, innovation, and an equitable society is ensured”, Prof. Singh said. However, he also cautioned that Freedom without responsibility and accountability may lead to anarchy.
During his address, the Vice Chancellor mentioned unsung freedom struggle heroes of Assam. He said that although Gopinath Bordoloi is known to the rest of the country, several other freedom fighters such as Chandraprabha Saikiani, Kanaklata Barua etc. are not known to the rest of the country. However, he said that times are changing, and people are getting to know unsung heroes of this region. He compared the valour of Kanaklata with that of Jeanne d’Arc, a French young girl, who sacrificed her life at a young age fighting for her motherland. Prof. Singh further said that the feeling of patriotism in this region is more than that of other parts of the country.
The three-day celebrations featured a series of performances, such as cultural performances, exhibitions, extempore competitions, inter hostel decorations, sports activities etc. As part of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, the University organised an exhibition showcasing the pain & tragedy of the partition. Under Meri Mati Mera Desh campaign, a drama showcasing the contributions of Northeast India towards freedom struggle was organised. Students from various departments presented dance, music, and drama performances that captured the essence of the nation’s journey to independence and its continued pursuit of growth and prosperity.
