In a thrilling T20 final that went on till the last ball, team UK in Kolkata lost to team TAFI (Travel Agents Federation of India) in the first ever ‘Bengal-Britain Travel Friendship’ cup.
The British Deputy High Commission Kolkata hosted the cricket tournament in collaboration with travel trade partners (Travel Agents Federation of India, SKAL International, Travel Agents Association of India) at the Police Athletic Club on 27 and 28 January 2024.
We are harnessing the sports diplomacy opportunities such as this to further deepen our relationship with the travel and tourism trade of Kolkata. This gives scope to strengthen the UK and India people to people connections with whom we share a common passion of cricket.
The finals were played between UK in Kolkata vs TAFI on Sunday 28 January. Team TAFI won the toss and put the host to bat first. The UK in Kolkata team scored 184 runs in 20 overs. Team TAFI successfully chased the target in 19.5 overs. Kishore Madnani was given the Man of the Match for his quick 53 runs off 33 balls. Siddhant Agarwal, the youngest player of the field at age 14, was adjudged the Impact Player of the Finals for scoring 27 off 10 balls and hitting the winning run. Amit Sengupta, Captain of the UKinKolkata team was recognised as the Highest Wicket Taker and Player of the Series.
Dr. Andrew Fleming, British Deputy High Commissioner to East and Northeast India said: “Congratulations to team TAFI on winning this trophy. Our home team of UK in Kolkata gave their all taking the contest to the final ball of the final over; I am proud of their efforts. Sports diplomacy initiatives such as this are part of our efforts to promote UK and India relations as England is on a winning spree after their first Test match against India. We hope to strengthen our living bridge between Bengal and Britain by working with relevant partners. Going forward, I would like women’s teams to also participate in future tournaments.”
