BSF, Vigilant troops of 32 Battalion, BSF deployed in the border area of Nadia district under South Bengal Frontier arrested a couple coming to India from Bangladesh at Land Custom Station, Gede with 78 Notes of denomination of Rs 2000 Note worth Rs. 1.56 lakh. Let us tell you that the seized Rs 2000 notes have been taken out of circulation in the market by the Reserve Bank of India and instructions were also issued regarding their return.
According to the information, this incident took place at Land Custom Station Gede, where on May 16, when the soldiers of BSF border outpost Gede were searching the luggage of all the Bangladeshi citizens coming to India legally. Meanwhile, a Bangladeshi couple was also coming to India with a visa, when BSF jawans searched their luggage at the security checkpoint, they found a total of 78 notes of Rs 2000 denomination. Rs 2000 notes are not in common circulation in the Indian market at present. Therefore, when both the husband and wife were interrogated about them, they could not give any satisfactory answer and then both were taken into custody.
During preliminary interrogation, they were identified as Zahurul Islam and his wife Kanji Fatema, a resident of Narayanpur village of Rajbari district of Bangladesh.
Interrogation revealed that both of them had come to India for the first time in 2018 for the treatment of their wife. He further said that he needed Rs 2 lakh for his wife’s treatment, so he had the money changed from the money exchanger. He also said that he did not know that this currency was not in circulation in India yet.
The detained couple along with the seized Indian currency were handed over to the Customs Department, Banpur.
Public Relations Officer of South Bengal Frontier, A.K Arya, DIG said that around 1000 to 1200 passengers travel through the Land Customs Station every day, Where individuals and their luggage are searched very thoroughly by the BSF jawans. Due to this no passenger can bring or take away any kind of goods illegally at the Land Customs Station. He further said that during the searches conducted by our jawans, many times they have been successful in seizing such goods used for smuggling.
