The State Cancer Society of Meghalaya and the Oncology Department, Civil Hospital Shillong today observed the National Cancer Survivors Day at DAE-Civil Hospital Cancer Wing, Civil Hospital Shillong under the theme “A Celebration Of Life”. Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh, Health & Family Welfare Minister graced the programme as chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh said, the day marked as a celebration to those who have battled and won, and also to help bring hope to those still battling the disease. She said that the battle against cancer is not an individual fight, but the government is committed to ensure that people are provided with the best possible treatment for cancer. The government is striving towards bringing the latest medical equipment and facilities to every district of the state. The minister also acknowledged the remarkable commitments of the doctors, nurses and all the health professionals for providing treatment and their compassionate care and support to the patients.
In his address, Sampath Kumar, Principal Secretary, Department of Health & Family Welfare stressed that regular screening and early detection can cure cancer. Kumar said that the government is making an effort to provide care through the Cancer Wing of Civil Hospital, Shillong for more than seven thousand patients every year. The healthcare budgetary expenditure of the state government is almost close to 9 percent of the state budget, he added.
During the programme, cancer survivors shared testimonies of their journey, diagnosis and treatment and they also urged and inspired others who are undergoing treatment to have a positive mindset and approach to overcome the disease.
National Cancer Survivors Day is observed every year dedicated to celebrating the lives of cancer survivors, raising awareness about the challenges they faced, and promoting support for ongoing cancer care. This day serves as a reminder of the progress made in cancer treatment and their importance of continuing efforts to improve the quality of life for survivors.
