Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling Celebrates International Yoga Day and Pays Tribute to Kargil Heroes

On the eve of International Yoga Day, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) in Darjeeling hosted a special event to honour the 25th anniversary of the Kargil victory. This commemorative event featured the performance of a 25-sequence Surya Namaskar, with enthusiastic participation from all staff and their families, paying tribute to the Kargil heroes.

This year’s International Yoga Day theme, “Yoga for Self and Society,” was prominently highlighted by Group Captain Jai Kishan, Principal of HMI. He emphasized the significance of yoga in enhancing both individual and collective well-being. “Yoga is the key for self and society,” he noted, underlining the extensive health benefits yoga offers, including physical well-being, mental clarity, and emotional stability. These benefits contribute to both individual health and societal harmony.

Group Captain Jai Kishan also spotlighted the substantial benefits of yoga for women, who can experience improved flexibility, strength, and stress relief through regular practice. He stated, “Yoga is especially beneficial for women and I encourage all women to practice yoga.” The inclusion of families in the celebration further highlighted yoga’s role in fostering community bonds and holistic wellness.

In collaboration with India Tourism Mumbai Region, today’s event also marked the commencement of the Surya Namaskar Challenge. Running from 21 June 2024 to 26 July 2024, participants are encouraged to perform yoga asanas and Surya Namaskar at their respective locations, upload their videos on social media, and tag @hmidarj. All participants will receive a digital certificate, promoting widespread engagement and recognition.

Reflecting on the event, Group Captain Jai Kishan remarked, “As we celebrate 25 years of Kargil victory, today’s tribute through 25 sequences of Surya Namaskar not only honors our heroes but also symbolizes the resilience and unity yoga brings to our lives.”

The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting the values of yoga and honoring the sacrifices of the Kargil heroes through meaningful and engaging initiatives.
