Tragedy Strikes: Over 116 Dead in Hathras Religious Event Stampede, PM Modi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF

A devastating stampede at a religious event in the Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh on July 2 has claimed the lives of at least more than 116 died.

The incident occurred during a satsang, a prayer meeting led by religious leader Narayan Sarkar in the Sikandrarau area, which saw an attendance of approximately 10,000 people, primarily women.

Eyewitnesses shared harrowing scenes of chaos and despair, with bodies lying outside the post-mortem house and relatives crying for help. Many were forced to transport the injured and deceased in tempos due to a shortage of ambulances. Witnesses reported that over 116 individuals were left unconscious at the event site, overwhelmed by the lack of immediate medical assistance.

Chief Medical Officer, Etah, Dr. Umesh Kumar Tripathi, confirmed that 27 bodies were brought to the post-mortem house, with 25 of the deceased being female. The exact cause of the stampede is still under investigation by the police.

In response to the tragedy, the State Government has announced an ex gratia payment of ₹2 lakh to the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed deep sorrow over the incident, offering condolences to the bereaved families. He has formed a committee to investigate the cause of the stampede and has directed officials to expedite relief and rescue operations. High-ranking officials, including ministers Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary and Sandeep Singh, as well as the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, have been instructed to visit the site to oversee the situation.

National leaders have also expressed their condolences. President Droupadi Murmu described the incident as heart-rending and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the Lok Sabha, assured that all necessary assistance would be provided to the victims.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Priyanka Gandhi, also conveyed their sympathies and called for comprehensive aid and compensation for the victims. The opposition parties have urged their workers to assist those affected by the disaster.
