Leader of Oppsition Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi visited Assam and Manipur

The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi visited flood-affected areas in Assam and Manipur on July 8, 2024.

In Assam, Rahul Gandhi visited a flood relief camp in Lakhipur, Cachar district, and interacted with the displaced residents.

Rahul Gandhi then traveled to Manipur, where he visited relief camps in Jiribam and Thalai. Manipur has been facing prolonged community unrest between the Meitei and Kuki communities for almost a year.

Rahul Gandhi met with the victims of the violence and the recent flash floods that have destroyed around 4,000 houses in the state.

The Congress leader’s visit to the Northeast comes as the party aims to turn up the heat on the BJP government over the Manipur crisis, which the opposition has accused the ruling party of mishandling.

However, the BJP has criticized Rahul Gandhi’s visit as an attempt to politicize the sensitive situation in Manipur. BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad stated that “Manipur is a sensitive issue” and accused the Congress of trying to gain political mileage from the crisis.

This is Rahul Gandhi’s first visits to Northeast since becoming Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

The leader of opposition Lok Sabha is also scheduled to meet Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey at the Governor House at around 6 PM.
