The young brigade of the NorthEast United FC on Sunday landed in Aizawl to participate in GIG Motor Independence Day Football Tournament 2024 that will take place in Mizoram.
The young Highlanders are placed in Group B along with Aizawl FC, Mizoram Police FC, Chawnpui FC and FC Bethlehem. The tournament kicked-off on July 31. The top two teams from the group will qualify for the semifinals on 12 August before the final on 15 August, India’s Independence Day.
“This tournament provides a fantastic opportunity for our youth players to play against the quality opposition from Mizoram. It’s the first tournament of the season,so it gives us a chance to assess where we stand as a team. It gives us a chance to give valuable playing minutes to our players,” Suhel Nair, Head of Youth Development, NorthEast United FC said.
“I would also like to thank Mizoram Football Association for organizing such a nice tournament and inviting NorthEast United FC to be a part of it,” he added.
The Highlanders play all their matches at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Mualpui. They open their campaign against Aizawl FC on August 5 (12:30 kick-off), before facing Mizoram Police FC on August 7 (3:30 pm). On August 9, they take on Chawnpui FC (12:30pm) before the last group game against FC Bethlehem on August 11 (3:30).
