Supreme Court grant bail former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister

The former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi and Aam Aadmi Party leader Manish Sisodia , has been granted bail by the Supreme Court after spending 17 months in custody related to the Delhi excise policy scam on Friday ( August 9, 2024).

The Supreme Court gave him bail earlier in the day and said his long incarceration without trial had deprived him of the right to speedy justice.

The court noted that Sisodia’s right to a speedy trial was violated, as the trial had not commenced during his incarceration.Conditions for his bail include a ₹10 lakh bond, surrendering his passport, regular reporting to the investigating officer, and refraining from influencing witnesses.

The court emphasized that bail should be the norm, not incarceration.

After Supreme Court granting bail to him on Friday, Mr. Sisodia said he was “feeling indebted to Baba Saheb Ambedkar after this order”.

Sisodia was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on February 26, 2023 and he resigned from the Delhi cabinet on February 28, 2023.
