Paris Paralympics 2024: Avani Lekhara and Mona Agarwal claims gold and bronze for India in 10m air rifle final

Avani Lekhara has made history by winning the gold medal in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 final at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

This victory marks her second consecutive gold at the Paralympic Games, following her groundbreaking win in Tokyo 2020, where she became the first Indian woman to achieve this feat.

In the final held on August 30, 2024, Lekhara delivered a remarkable performance, improving her own Paralympic record with a score of 249.7 points, surpassing her previous record by 0.1 points. The competition was intense, featuring strong contenders like Iryna Shchetnik and fellow Indian shooter Mona Agarwal, who ultimately secured the bronze medal.

The final stages of the event were particularly dramatic. Lekhara initially faced pressure as she shot a 9.9, trailing behind South Korea’s Yunri Lee, who had taken the lead with a score of 10.7. However, in a stunning turn of events, Lekhara shot a 10.5 in her final attempt, while Lee faltered with a score of 6.8, allowing Lekhara to clinch the gold.

Another Indian Mona Agarwal securd the bronze medal with a score of 228.7.
