The ICAR-Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries Research (ICAR-DCFR) successfully concluded a three-day specialized training programme on “Breeding, Culture, and Health Management of Rainbow Trout” from September 4 to 6, 2024. Hosted at the Government Trout Farm in Shergaon, West Kameng, this initiative was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, and the District Fisheries Development Officer (DFDO) of West Kameng district.
The training programme aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of local fish farmers, aquaculture professionals, and fisheries officials in advanced techniques of rainbow trout cultivation. Participants were introduced to cutting-edge practices in trout breeding, sustainable culture methods, and comprehensive health management strategies. Leading researchers and experts from ICAR-DCFR delivered insightful presentations on the latest advancements in rainbow trout breeding and aquaculture. These sessions provided valuable information on improving trout yields and maintaining optimal health standards.
Practical demonstrations were conducted at the Government Trout Farm, Shergaon, showcasing modern techniques in water quality management, disease prevention, and efficient feeding practices. Participants had the opportunity to engage with these methods and ask questions to refine their understanding.
The programme was inaugurated by Anjali Siga, CO Shergaon and chief guest of the event, who emphasized the importance of such training programmes in empowering local communities and enhancing regional rainbow trout aquaculture practices. Mrs. Tesering Wangmu Lama, ZPM Shergaon and guest of honour, urged fish farmers to adopt scientific trout farming to generate income and foster prosperity within their communities.
Programme coordinators Dr. Suresh Chandra, Principal Scientist, along with Senior Scientists and Nodal Officers (NEH) Dr. S.K. Mallik and Dr. R.S. Haldar from ICAR-DCFR, encouraged fish farmers in the West Kameng district to engage in trout farming as a viable and sustainable livelihood option. M.C. Adak, DFDO, and Pema Khandu Thungun, FO, West Kameng district, shared their views and highlighted the importance of utilising this opportunity to gain knowledge from the training.
The valedictory function was presided over by Dorjee Khandu Thugon, Deputy Chairman of Garung Thuk NGO, Shergaon, who appreciated all the trout growers of the West Kameng district for their active participation in the training programme and their commitment to developing trout farming in the district. On this occasion, DFDO Shri M.C. Adak acknowledged the valuable contributions made by Dr. Pramod Kumar Pandey, Director, ICAR-DCFR, for the expansion of rainbow trout farming and its significant production in the district under NEH activity.
The event also facilitated networking among stakeholders, fostering stronger connections between local fish farmers, the Department of Fisheries, West Kameng district, and ICAR-DCFR researchers. This networking is expected to drive future collaborations and support the growth of the trout farming industry in the region.
The training programme was well-received by 55 attendees, who appreciated the practical insights and actionable strategies. The successful conclusion of this event marks a significant step forward in the development of rainbow trout culture practices in Arunachal Pradesh.
