Trinamul Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Jawhar Sircar on Sunday has resigned from both the Rajya Sabha and politics, citing dissatisfaction with the West Bengal government’s handling of the RG Kar incident and ongoing corruption within the party.
In his resignation letter to Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, Sircar expressed his disillusionment with the state’s governance and criticized the party’s response to recent events, including the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College, which sparked widespread protests.
In a post on X, Sircar wrote, ” I am quitting as MP primarily because of WB government’s faulty handling of the most spontaneous public movement following the terrible rape-murder case at RG Kar Hospital. Quitting politics— to be with the people in their struggle for justice. My commitment to values unchanged.”
Sircar indicated that he had hoped for a more decisive intervention from the party leadership regarding the unrest among junior doctors but felt that the government’s actions were inadequate and delayed. He also raised concerns about corruption among local party leaders, stating that their unchecked behavior contributed to the current political climate.
This resignation marks a significant moment for the TMC, as Sircar had been an active voice within the party, challenging both internal corruption.
Jawhar Sircar is a retired Indian Administrative Services officer served as chief executive officer in Prasar Bharati from 2012 to 2016 and was Secretary to the Government of India 2008–12.
