The General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Sitaram Yechury passed away on Thursday at the age of 72 after battling a prolonged illness.
He was being treated at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi for an acute respiratory tract infection.
Yechury, born on August 12, 1952 in Chennai, was a prominent figure in Indian politics. He had been serving as the CPI(M) General Secretary since 2015.
Yechury spent his formative years in Hyderabad and Delhi, where his political journey commenced during his college days at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
He was a member of the Rajya Sabha for several terms. Yechury was known as an affable and accommodative Leftist, and arguably the most popular face of his party in recent times.
He is survived by his wife Seema Chishti Yechury and two children.
