A significant awareness programme, part of the Indian Space Research Organization’s ongoing ‘Space on Wheels’ initiative, was organized at Darrang College, Tezpur. The event was a joint effort by Vignan Bharti, North East Space Movement (NESM), North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR), and the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR), in collaboration with the North East Space Application Centre (NESAC).

The Chief Guest for the event was Dr. Shyamal Prasad Saikia, Hon’ble Chairperson of ASCPCR. Other notable attendees included Shri Ajoy Kumar Dutta and Smt. Rilanjana Talukdar, members of ASCPCR; Shri Rajiv Sarma, Secretary of Vignan Bharati; Dr. P.M. Saikia, Principal of Darrang College; and Dr. Bhuyan of NECTAR and Tezpur Science Academy, among many others.

The event commenced with an opening speech by Rajib Sarma, who emphasized the primary goal of the programme—to inspire the younger generation to explore the vast opportunities in science and technology and to consider building a career in these fields.

Dr. Shyamal Prasad Saikia delivered a powerful address to the students, highlighting a special initiative spearheaded by Assam’s Hon’ble Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. This initiative will select 400 meritorious students through competitive exams, with the top five students being chosen to study space and technology abroad.

Rilanjana Talukdar, a member of ASCPCR, spoke about the growing importance of pursuing careers in space and technology, citing opportunities in diverse fields such as robotics, artificial intelligence, telecommunications, disaster management, climate change monitoring, and medical science.

Ajoy Kumar Dutta, another ASCPCR member, encouraged students to work hard and expand their knowledge in the field of space and technology. Other dignitaries also delivered speeches, all aligned with the theme of motivating the next generation to pursue scientific careers.

The event concluded with the inauguration of the ‘Space on Wheels’—a technology-equipped bus for students—by the ASCPCR Chairperson. The initiative was met with great appreciation from the people of Tezpur.

On the preceding Monday, the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) held a review meeting at the DC Conference Hall in Sonitpur, chaired by Dr. Shyamal Prasad Saikia, IPS (Retd.). Attendees included Ajoy Kumar Dutta and Rilanjana Talukdar from ASCPCR, Kabita Kakati Konwar, ADC Social Welfare Sonitpur, Mousumi Kalita, Additional SP, Rupak Baruah, Joint Director of Health, along with officials from the Police, Labour, Education, Social Welfare, CWC, DCPO, and Transport departments.

The Commission also visited the Maternity and Child Health Wing at Poruwa, Tezpur, to review the SNCU (Special Newborn Care Unit) and engaged in discussions with the Superintendent and other concerned personnel.
