West Bengal’s Baranagar village has been recognized as the ‘Best Tourism Village’ in India

A big achievement of West Bengal tourism department Baranagar village in Murshidabad district has been recognized as the ‘Best Tourism Village’ in India for the Agri-Tourism category by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.

This announcement was made on September 19, 2024, highlighting Baranagar’s potential in promoting agricultural tourism and its unique cultural heritage.

Baranagar village is located at Jiaganj block and Lalbagh Sub-division of Murshidabad.

The village’s big attraction is the Kiriteswari Temple, considered one of the 51 Shaktipeeths. The original temple was constructed about 1000 years ago and this place was considered to be the sleeping place of Mahamaya. Local people call this temple as Mahishamardini.

The selection is seen as a significant achievement for West Bengal’s tourism sector, showcasing the village’s offerings that attract visitors interested in agrarian lifestyles and local traditions.

The recognition aims to enhance the visibility of Baranagar as a tourist destination, contributing to local economic development through increased visitor engagement and sustainable tourism practices.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her delight after the Baranagar village was selected. Sharing her excitement on her social media platform X, Banerjee said, ” I am delighted to share that Baranagar village in Murshidabad district has been selected as the ‘Best Tourism Village’ in the Agri-Tourism category by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.The award will be presented on World Tourism Day on 27th September. Let’s continue to nurture and promote the unique treasures of our state for the world to see.”

Baranagar village stands out in the agri-tourism category due to several key factors:

Historical and Cultural Significance:

Baranagar, often referred to as the “Varanasi of Bengal,” is rich in history, particularly from the 18th century when Rani Bhabani ruled. The village is home to the Baranagar Terracotta Temple Complex, which includes notable temples such as the Char Bangla Temple and the Bhubaneshwar Temple. These structures showcase exquisite terracotta artistry and depict scenes from Hindu mythology, making them significant cultural landmarks.
Community Involvement.

The local community actively:
participates in promoting and sustaining their heritage through various crafts, including weaving fine cotton fabrics like Baluchuri and Jamdani, as well as bamboo cane crafts and pottery. This involvement not only preserves traditional skills but also enhances the village’s appeal as a tourist destination.

Sustainable Tourism Practices :

Baranagar’s selection as the ‘Best Tourism Village’ reflects its commitment to sustainable tourism. The village exemplifies community-based values and lifestyles while promoting economic, social and environmental sustainability.

This aligns with the goals of the Ministry of Tourism to foster rural development through tourism.

The Union ministry will give the award at a function in New Delhi on September 27.
