A race in the clouds: Arunachal’s Tawang celebrated the second edition of high-altitude International marathon

The Tawang International Marathon, first held in 2023, is an annual event that showcases the breathtaking beauty of Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh. Known for its challenging yet scenic routes and participants literally run above the clouds on 10000 feet above the mean sea level.

The much awaited second edition of prestigious Tawang marathon 2024 was conducted successfully at Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso high altitude stadium Tawang on 24th October which is United Nations Flag day.The gala event witnessed participation of 4400 runners across the country except union territories and 11 participants from different countries.

“The event showcased Tawang’s potential as a world-class adventure tourism destination while highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the area. Visitors had the unique opportunity to experience the traditions and lifestyle of the indigenous Monpa community.” Defence Spokesman Lt .Col. Athul Sreedharan said.

“The collaborative effort in organising the event emphasised the deep bond shared between the people of Arunachal Pradesh and the Indian Army”. He added.

Beyond being a race, the Tawang Marathon provided an economic and cultural boost to the region. The influx of thousands of participants and visitors greatly benefited local businesses, particularly in tourism and hospitality.

It was graced by presence of Arunachal CM Pema Khandu,Gajraj Corps Commander, Lt Gen Gambhir Singh, GOC, Rupa Division, Maj Gen KS Grewal , besides other civil & military dignitaries.

It is a story of dedication, perseverance, and the unbreakable will to succeed.His achievement inspires to all to aim higher, work harder, and never give up, no matter how tough the journey may be.

The Indian Army who are always made more than a billion people of the Motherland feel safe by guarding India’s International borders with their selfless sacrifice and dedication has also been very prominent with its contribution towards sports helping the country provide some of the best athletes on the global stage.

Army’s one of the sports venture is “Tawang Marathon” which is India’s one of the most challenging mountain running venture.

We talked two senior athletes of Indian Track and Field,viz Soma Biswas and Sushmita Sinha Roy.

“It is a good initiative.This way we can see improvement in tourism, encouragement in fitness, empowering the local community, cultural exchanges, economic developments and lots more.”

Sushmita Sinha Roy, an Indian heptathlete shared. This lady won a silver and a bronze medal for her respective category at the IAAF Asian Championships (2005 in Incheon, South Korea, and 2007 in Amman, Jordan)

“I feel it’s great opportunity to promote local culture by collaboration with local authorities, and making it seen on the global map. Also a good drive to promote fitness too.Army’s contribution is immense. I urge them to promote more Sports at the remote areas of North East so that the youth will be interested to choose sports as a career.Also I feel the nation should be proud of Indian Army.”- Former Heptathlete Soma Biswas said.

She rose to fame when she won the two silver medal in 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea and another in 2006 Asian Games in Doha.

This International marathon is very important for a number of reasons, including:

“We are fully prepared for all the task which was given to us to maintain the peace and tranquility in the border areas and I hope in future we will be more capable too.”

The International Tawang Marathon has firmly established Tawang on the global marathon map, reinforcing its reputation as a premier destination for adventure, culture, and community spirit.
