INS Shalki, an Indian Navy submarine, which boasts stealth capabilities arrived quietly from the Bay of Bengal to make its presence felt. Two helicopters descended low over an assault boat and elite MARCOS commandoes slithered expertly down a rope into the boat.They also conducted a simulated rescue operation.
INS Shalki (S46) is a Shishumar-class diesel-electric submarine of the Indian Navy.This submarine was the first ever submarine to be built in India.
On 2 August 2024, INS Shalki arrived at the Port of Colombo, situated in Colombo, Sri Lanka, as part of a formal visit. Following the completion of the official engagement, the submarine is scheduled to depart from the island country on 4 August 2024. This is the third submarine to visit Sri Lanka after the visit of INS Vagir and INS Karanj in June 2023 and February 2024, respectively.
The Submarine Day is celebrated every year by the Indian Navy on December 8 to commemorate the induction of the first submarine, the erstwhile INS Kalvari, into the Indian Navy on this day in 1967.The Foxtrot class submarine was decommissioned on the 31st May, 1996, after 29 years of service.
The Submarine day is observed to remember and honour submariners who made supreme sacrifice in their service, it was stated.
