Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh passes away at AIIMS Delhi

Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has passed away at the age of 92. He died on December 26, 2024, after being admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi due to deteriorating health.

Dr. Singh served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 and was a prominent figure in Indian politics, known for his role in liberalizing the Indian economy during the early 1990s as Finance Minister. His leadership is credited with significant economic reforms that transformed India into one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.

His death marks the end of an era in Indian politics, and tributes have poured in from leaders across the globe, recognizing his contributions to public service and economic development.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi  pays tribute to Manmohan Singh, in a post on X PM Modi wrote, ” India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives.”

Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, now in Pakistan, Singh was a distinguished economist with degrees from Panjab University and the University of Oxford. He had a long political career, serving in various capacities including as the Chief Economic Advisor and Governor of the Reserve Bank of India before becoming Prime Minister.
