NorthEast United FC aim to extend its unbeaten run to seven games

NorthEast United FC will look to extend their unbeaten run to seven games when they face Hyderabad FC in their Indian Super League (ISL 2024-25) clash at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium here Wednesday.

The Highlanders embarked on this unbeaten run with a stunning comeback against Hyderabad FC in the reverse fixture. Juan Pedro Benali’s men turned the game around after falling two goals behind and triumphed 5-2 on the night with a brace from Guillermo Fernandez and a goal from Alaaeddine Ajaraie.

NorthEast United FC are currently sixth in the table with 25 points from 17 games, and a win would see them climb to the third spot. Ahead of the team’s last league game in Guwahati, the team’s head coach Juan Pedro Benali urged the fans to make the game memorable.

“We will give everything on the field. This is a crucial game for us. We need everyone to come to the stadium. When the fans are here, we fly. This is the moment we need our fans with us,” Benali said.

“It doesn’t matter where we play, whether in Guwahati, Shillong or away, we want to win. We want to have three points,” Parthib Gogoi, the local boy from Assam, echoed Benali’s sentiment about the importance of the game.

Gogoi has five goal contributions (two goals & three assists) this season. He assisted Alaaeddine Ajaraie’s opener against Mumbai City FC, the fastest goal of the ISL 2024-25 at 46 seconds. He also made a goal contribution to Games against Odisha FC, Jamshedpur FC, and Hyderabad FC.

Ajaraie is the leading goal contributor in the league with 15 goals and five assists. The Spanish duo of Guillermo Fernandez and Nestor Albiach has four goals each. India international Jithin MS is one of the leading assist providers with five assists. The midfield trio of Mayakkannan, Macarton Nickson and Mohammed Ali Bemammer have pulled the strings for the Highlanders.

Left-back Buanthanglun Samte has created 31 chances for the Highlanders and is the only defender on the top-10 list of most chances created. Along with Michel Zabaco, Asheer Akhtar and Redeem Tlang, who’s set to make his 100th ISL appearance, have kept things watertight at the back. As a result, Gurmeet Singh has five clean sheets against his name.

Come Wednesday, NorthEast United FC would look to complete a league double over Hyderabad FC and make the last league game in Guwahati a memorable one for the fans. NorthEast United FC will play their next three home games in Shillong.
