The incident unfolded around 2:00 a.m. when an overwhelming crowd of approximately 5 crore pilgrims surged towards the riverbanks, causing barricades to collapse.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his deepest condolences to the devotees who lost their family members in the stampede at the Maha Kumbh, describing the tragedy as extremely saddening.
In a post on X, PM Modi said the local administration in Prayagraj is giving all possible help to the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
PM Modi said that he has spoken to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and all necessary steps are being taken to support those affected in the tragedy. Modi also wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
President Droupadi Murmu tweets, “The stampede at Prayagraj Maha Kumbh is extremely sad.
The President of India Droupadi Murmu also express her condolences to the families of the injured devotees and pray to God that all the injured devotees recover soon.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke to CM Yogi Adityanath after the stampede-like situation took place at Sangam.
Over 400 million people were expected to attend the festival, with Wednesday being a significant day when holy people from 13 sects take their ritual baths.
