Almost Eighteen people lost their lives and many others were injured on Saturday night.
The incident occurred when a massive crowd assembled after the announcement of a special train, resulting in panic within 15-20 minutes the news agency ANI reported it.
An eyewitness, Ravi said news agency ANI “The stampede broke out around 9:30 pm… When people on platform number 13 saw trains on platforms 14 and 15 – they moved towards these platforms. The platforms of the trains were not changed, but the crowd was so huge that it could not be controlled.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X and said, “Distressed by the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured have a speedy recovery. The authorities are assisting all those who have been affected by this stampede.”
The President of India post on X and said, ” Deeply anguished to know about the loss of lives in a stampede at New Delhi Railway station. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and pray for speedy recovery of those injured.”
The Indian Railways announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the deceased victims Rs 2.5 lakh to those who were seriously injured and Rs 1 lakh for those who received minor injuries.
AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal tweets, “The tragic death of the devotees going to Maha Kumbh in the accident at New Delhi Railway Station is unfortunate and painful. May God give peace to their souls. My condolences to all the families who lost their loved ones in the accident.”
