NorthEast United FC will look to consolidate their playoff spot in the Indian Super League (ISL 2024-25) when they host Bengaluru FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Friday.
The Highlanders are coming off an impressive 2-0 away victory against Jamshedpur FC, while Bengaluru FC also secured a 3-0 home win against the same opponent in their previous match. NorthEast United FC currently sit fourth in the standings with 32 points from 21 games, one point and two places above Bengaluru FC, making this a blockbuster clash.
Moroccan forward Alaaeddine Ajaraie has been in sensational form for NorthEast United FC, rewriting the ISL record books in their last outing. His brace against Jamshedpur FC saw him become the player with the most goals (20) and most goal contributions (25). His first goal broke the previous record of 18 goals by Ferran Corominas and Bartholomew Ogbeche, while his second further extended his lead.
Despite the individual accolades, Ajaraie remains focused on the team’s goals. “I’m happy with the record, but the team always comes first,” he stated. “Our primary target is reaching the playoffs. I can’t score all the goals alone; my teammates always help me. In the last game, Thoi gave me a great assist for the record-breaking goal.”
NorthEast United FC’s defence will be looking to replicate their solid performance against Jamshedpur FC, where they secured a clean sheet. With Gurmeet Singh in goal and a backline marshalled by captain Michel Zabaco, and featuring Redeem Tlang, Asheer Akhtar, and Buanthanglun Samte, the Highlanders will aim to keep Bengaluru FC at bay.
Head Coach Juan Pedro Benali urged fans to pack the JLN Stadium and create a hostile atmosphere for the visitors. “Come to the stadium and support us,” he implored. “Be the first player of NorthEast United FC, not just our 12th man. Let Bengaluru FC players feel the pressure – the pressure of playing in Shillong, the pressure of playing against the Wolves. I promise, when our players feel the support of our fans, they will fly.”
