The Department of Communication and Journalism at Gauhati University, in collaboration with the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, inaugurated the three-day ‘Jonaki – Northeast Film Festival 2025’, with climate change as its central theme, spanning across the 7th, 8th, and 9th of March.
The inaugural ceremony of the three-day event was graced by renowned actress Seema Biswas. The Head of the Department of Communication and Journalism, Dr Chandan Kumar Goswami, delivered the inaugural address. The event witnessed the presence of distinguished guests, including the Director of IQAC, Gauhati University, Dhruvajyoti Saharia; Professor Asha Kothari; the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Ratul Mohanta; along with eminent filmmakers, artists, professors, students, and dignitaries.
Representing the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, Minakshi Das Nath, Secretary and Additional Chief Executive Officer of Revenue, DM, and ASDMA, Government of Assam; Project Officers Mandira Buragohain and Limpi Moni Talukdar were present. During the ceremony, notable filmmakers such as Bobby Sharma Barua, Apurba Sharma, and Utpal Borpujari, among others, were felicitated.
Centred around climate change, the festival will screen a total of 25 films across various categories, including those highlighting disasters, human-nature conflicts, and nature-climate relationships. The festival coordinator, Dr Bharati Bharali, mentioned that this film festival aims to raise public awareness and bring various aspects of climate change closer to the people through the medium of cinema.
