Charak Puja, also known as Nil Puja or Hajrha Puja, is a traditional Hindu folk festival dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is characterized by rigorous penance and physical endurance, symbolizing the devotees’ unwavering faith and commitment. Participants, often referred to as ‘sannyasis’ or ‘bhoktas’, engage in various acts of self-sacrifice, including body piercing and fire-walking, as a form of devotion and to seek divine blessings.
The day’s events commenced with elaborate rituals and prayers, followed by a series of performances that showcased the rich cultural heritage of the region. Traditional music and dance added to the festive atmosphere, drawing spectators from across the Silchar and beyond.
As the sun set, the fervor of the celebrations intensified, culminating in the dramatic ‘Charak’ ritual, where devotees were suspended from a tall pole, symbolizing the cycle of life and death, and the eternal bond between the devotee and the divine.
The successful execution of Charak Puja 2025 in Silchar not only reinforced the community’s cultural identity but also highlighted the enduring significance of traditional festivals in contemporary society.
