It has been observed that several road vehicles are indulging in reckless driving near level crossings, ignoring the closing signals of the gate booms, and in many cases, colliding with the gates. These dangerous actions not only pose a severe threat to the lives of the violators and others but also cause significant disruptions to both rail and road traffic. Damage to gate barriers and associated infrastructure delays train schedules and causes inconvenience to thousands of passengers.
It may be noted that violation of safety rules is a punishable offence under railway act. Eastern Railway in taking all round endeavour to curve violation of safety norms at level crossings. In the first four months of current year, 59 Persons arrested by RPF of Sealdah Division from Jan-25 to Apr-25 under Section:160 (2) of Railways Act for breaking safety rules at Level Crossings.
Sealdah Division urges to all citizens and commuters to exercise utmost caution and strictly adhere to the rules at level crossing gates. Instances of boom dashing can lead to severe accidents and also put your life and the lives of others in danger, sometimes fatal also. These significantly impact the punctuality of train services, causing inconvenience to countless passengers.
Furthermore, it is crucial to understand that damaging railway property, including boom barriers at level crossing gates, is a punishable offense under the Section 160 of the Railways Act, those found responsible for such acts will face strict legal action.
The safety rules are hereunder:
(a) Always wait patiently for the gates to open completely before attempting to cross.
(b) Never try to go around, under, or through closed gates.
(c) Be vigilant and attentive to the signals and warnings at level crossings.
(d) Educate others, especially children and new drivers, about the importance of level crossing safety.
That will make Railway operation smooth and seamless and save your priceless life.
