The 1st Ride to DOKA LA, themed “For the Promotion of Battlefield Tourism”, was ceremonially flagged off this morning by the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation and Commerce & Industries Departments, Government of Sikkim, Tshering Thendup Bhutia, from Zero Point, Gangtok.
The event was inaugurated in the presence of Additional Chief Secretary CS Rao, Brigadier 17th Mountain Division Kunal Mukherjee, Additional Secretary Tourism Ms Prena Chamling, senior departmental officials, dignitaries, and a large contingent of riders and adventure enthusiasts.
This landmark initiative has been organised by the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, in collaboration with the Home Department, Government of Sikkim, and the 17th Mountain Division–Libing, as part of the State’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.
Designed to spotlight Sikkim’s distinctive geographical and strategic attributes, the two-day expedition has brought together 161 riders representing nine prominent riding clubs: Sikkim Riders’ Club, Northern Riders MC, Khanchenndzonga MC, Eastern Enfielders, Dirty Angel Motorcycle Club, Alpine Riders Crew, Sikkim Brotherhood Bulleters, Open Road Wanderers, and Brothers on Wheels.
In his address, The Minister highlighted the potential of battlefield tourism as an emerging sector that integrates historical significance with adventure and scenic exploration. He noted that Sikkim’s border regions, endowed with spectacular landscapes, hold immense promise for developing new tourist destinations that add value to the state’s tourism portfolio.
The promotion of Doko La as a battlefield tourism destination was underscored as a key focus of the initiative. Recognized for its strategic importance and breathtaking views, Doko La is set to become a notable attraction for visitors seeking unique travel experiences that combine history and natural beauty.
The Minister further emphasized that tourism remains the mainstay of Sikkim’s economy, and the state government continues to work towards attracting more tourists through infrastructure development and diversified tourism offerings. The motorcycle ride was acknowledged as a valuable effort in advancing this mission by bringing attention to less-explored destinations like Doko La. He expressed appreciation for the participation of motorcycle clubs and acknowledged their role in promoting Sikkimese tourism. The Minister also extended best wishes to all riders, encouraging a safe and memorable journey.
The initiative not only seeks to foster responsible and sustainable tourism but also celebrates Sikkim’s breathtaking landscapes, cultural vibrancy, and spirit of adventure. As the riders embarked on their ascent through the Eastern Himalayas, the day promised an exhilarating blend of high-altitude exploration, warm local hospitality, and rich cultural experiences at Gnathang and Kupup, setting the tone for an unforgettable journey through Sikkim’s frontier heritage.
