Acting on precise intelligence, alert jawans of 143 Battalion of BSF South Bengal Frontier, deployed at Bithari border outpost, successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle gold across the India-Bangladesh international border in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district. In this operation, BSF arrested a smuggler with three gold biscuits being brought from Bangladesh into India. The total weight of seized gold is 335 grams, with an estimated value of ₹33,53,249.
According to sources, this operation was conducted on 7 May 2025 when BSF jawans at Bithari border outpost received confirmed intelligence regarding a gold smuggling attempt. Based on the information, jawans launched a special and well-planned operation. All troops at the Bithari check post were placed on high alert and surveillance was intensified across all possible routes. At around16:05, troops grew suspicious of the movements of a motorcycle rider near the Bithari camp. Upon stopping and interrogating the individual, a thorough search led to the recovery of three gold biscuits cleverly hidden between the motorcycle’s engine and center stand. The smuggler was immediately taken into custody and brought to BOP Bithari for further questioning.
In the initial interrogation, the accused revealed that he is a resident of Hakimpur Uttarpara in North 24 Parganas district and was supposed to deliver the gold to another individual in Swarupdaha, for which he was to receive only ₹3,000 as compensation. However, due to the vigilance of BSF, his plan failed and he was promptly apprehended.
It is worth noting that earlier, on 3 May, jawans of BSF’s 32 Battalion had also seized gold worth ₹1.56 crore at Banpur border outpost.
Apart from this, in other incidents, BSF seized a total of 35.26 kg of Ganja from the Indo-Bangladesh border in Murshidabad, Nadia and North 24 Parganas districts and also rescued 4 cattle from the clutches of cattle smugglers.
The apprehended smuggler along with the seized gold and narcotics have been handed over to the concerned departments for necessary legal action.
The Public Relations Officer of BSF South Bengal Frontier, while praising this incident, said that the vigilant jawans of BSF are fully capable and committed to stop the illegal activities of smuggling on the border. He urged the border residents to give any information related to gold smuggling to BSF’s Seema Sathi helpline number 14419 or through WhatsApp message or voice message on 9903472227. A suitable reward will be granted for credible information and the informer’s identity will remain confidential.
