In a momentous development for Mizoram, Aizawl, the state’s capital, has officially been integrated into India’s railway map. This achievement follows the successful completion and Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) authorization of the Bairabi–Sairang broad gauge railway line.
The line, spanning 51.38 kilometers, connects Sairang in Aizawl District to Bairabi in Assam, marking a significant stride in enhancing connectivity in Northeast India.
Project Overview:
The Bairabi–Sairang railway project was sanctioned in 2008–09 with an estimated cost of ₹8,213.72 crore. The line traverses challenging terrains, necessitating the construction of 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, and 23 tunnels. Notably, the project features the tallest railway pier in Mizoram, Bridge No. 196, with a height of 104 meters, surpassing the Qutub Minar by 42 meters.
The railway line comprises four stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang-Sihhmui. Sairang station, situated approximately 12 kilometers from Aizawl, serves as the terminus and is equipped with modern amenities, including computerized reservation systems, ticket counters, waiting rooms, food stalls, and restrooms. Future proposals for the station include a railway reservation center, parcel management services, a stadium, a skill development center, and railway internet services.
Significance of the Railway Line:
The operationalization of the Bairabi–Sairang railway line is poised to bring transformative changes to Mizoram:
Enhanced Connectivity: The rail link will significantly reduce travel time between Aizawl and neighboring regions, facilitating easier movement of people and goods.
Economic Growth:
Improved transportation infrastructure is expected to boost local industries, enhance trade, and attract investments, contributing to the state’s economic development.
Tourism Promotion:
Easier access to Mizoram’s scenic landscapes and cultural heritage sites is anticipated to increase tourist influx, benefiting the hospitality and service sectors.
Strategic Importance:
The railway line strengthens regional connectivity, aligning with broader national objectives of enhancing infrastructure in Northeast India.
Challenges and Resilience:
The journey to this milestone was fraught with challenges. Construction faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a tragic bridge collapse in August 2023 that resulted in 26 fatalities, and a landslide in August 2024 that partially damaged the Kawnpui station. Despite these setbacks, the project has progressed steadily, with approximately 93% of the work completed as of July 2024.
Future Prospects:
Looking ahead, the Bairabi–Sairang railway line is expected to serve as a catalyst for further infrastructure development in the region. Plans are underway to extend the railway line from Sairang to Zochachhuah (Zorinpui) near the India-Myanmar border, aligning with the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project.
