Dibang Valley, one of the most remote and sparsely populated districts in Arunachal Pradesh, has long remained a region untouched by digital progress. Located near the Indo-China border, its steep mountains, dense forests, and poor infrastructure rendered the area virtually disconnected from the rest of India—not just physically, but digitally. For decades, the absence of internet and reliable mobile networks meant that the residents lived in near-complete communication isolation.
Recognising the critical need to connect this strategic and sensitive region, the Indian Army, in collaboration with the state government authorities and a leading tele communication company ‘s pioneering effort to bring internet connectivity to Dibang Valley.
This joint civil-military initiative has transformed the landscape – not just with signals, but with hope. Laying down the infrastructure in such a hostile terrain was no easy task. Indian Army and the civil administration synergised their efforts especially for organising the air efforts and managing all the required stores and equipment for installing internet in the region.
The dedication of the officials of all stakeholders and efforts of their staff has enabled internet access for the first time in the region.
The benefits have been immediate and far-reaching. For the local population, especially students and youth, access to online education, digital services, and government portals with access to different schemes has opened up new possibilities. Farmers can now stay informed about weather forecasts and market rates, and patients in remote villages can consult doctors through telemedicine. The elderly can connect with family members outside the valley, and children can dream of opportunities far beyond their hamlet.
Local population can now avail the benefits of online banking and perform online transactions thus aiding better financial planning.
More than a communication upgrade, this marks a transformation in the lives of the people. The Indian Army, already respected for its role in protecting the nation’s borders, is now also seen as a bridge to development. Indian Army and the state government have helped enable a rare civil-military fusion model that ensures long-term stability, accessibility, and development.
This collaboration highlights how government entities including defence forces and private sector synergy can uplift frontier regions. It also sends a strong strategic signal – ensuring that India’s border areas are not only secure but also digitally empowered.
In the heart of the mountains, the sound of silence has finally been replaced by the hum of digital connectivity – a new era of inclusion.
