Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as the Vice President of India on July 21, 2025, citing health concerns and the need to prioritize medical advice.
His resignation, effective immediately, was submitted to President Droupadi Murmu in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution.

In his resignation letter, Dhankhar expressed gratitude to the President, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Council of Ministers, and Members of Parliament for their support during his tenure, which began on August 11, 2022.
Dhankhar, the 14th Vice President, also served as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. His resignation came on the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, prompting speculation due to its timing and his earlier statement on July 10, 2025, indicating he would retire in August 2027.
He is the third Vice President in Indian history to resign mid-term, following V.V. Giri (1969) and R. Venkataraman (1987), both of whom resigned to contest presidential elections.
Earlier he was also served as a governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022.
