The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that three Bangladeshi smugglers were killed following a confrontation with villagers in Tripura’s Bidyabil area on October 15. The incident occurred about three kilometres inside Indian territory.

According to the MEA’s Official Spokesperson, Shri Randhir Jaiswal, a group of three miscreants from Bangladesh crossed the international border and attempted to steal cattle from Bidyabil village. During the attempted theft, the intruders attacked local villagers with iron weapons and knives, resulting in the death of one Indian villager and injuries to several others.

Local residents resisted the attackers, leading to the death of two of the smugglers at the spot, while the third died in hospital a day later. Authorities swiftly reached the site, and police have registered a case in connection with the incident.

Jaiswal confirmed that the mortal remains of all three Bangladeshi nationals have been handed over to Bangladeshi authorities following standard border procedures.

Emphasizing the need for preventive action, the MEA spokesperson stated that the incident highlighted the importance of maintaining the sanctity of the international boundary. The Indian government has urged Bangladesh to take stronger measures to prevent cross-border crimes and to cooperate in completing border fencing wherever required.

The situation at the border has since remained under control, with local police and security forces maintaining heightened vigilance to prevent further smuggling attempts or violence.
