In a major step towards strengthening preventive healthcare, AIIMS Guwahati today inaugurated its Adult Immunization Clinic on the occasion of World Immunization Day. The clinic aims to promote lifelong vaccination, provide evidence-based immunization services for adults and raise awareness on the importance of protection against vaccine-preventable diseases beyond childhood. The launch echoed this year’s global theme, “Immunization for All is Humanly Possible.”
The Adult Immunization Clinic will provide vaccination and counselling services for adults, including healthcare workers, senior citizens, patients with chronic illnesses and immunocompromised individuals. It will offer a wide range of vaccines such as those against influenza, pneumococcal disease, hepatitis B, cervical cancer (HPV), tetanus and Japanese Encephalitis, in line with national and international recommendations. As one of the first such facilities in the North Eastern region, the clinic represents a significant milestone in promoting a culture of proactive health management and community protection.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Md Jamil, Additional Professor, Department of Medicine, and Dr. Rashmi Agarwalla, Associate Professor, Department of Community and Family Medicine, the Nodal Officers of the Clinic, emphasized that immunization should continue throughout life, as immunity can wane over time. They underlined that adults remain vulnerable to several serious infections such as influenza, pneumonia, hepatitis, HPV-related diseases and shingles. The inauguration was led by Prof. Ashok Puranik, Executive Director, AIIMS Guwahati, in the presence of Prof. Brian Shunyu, Medical Superintendent, Prof. Bhupen Barman, Head of the Department of Medicine, Prof. Saswati Tripathy, Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Prof. Unmona Borgohain Saikia, Nursing Principal.
The Adult Immunization Clinic will function in the Medicine OPD, 2nd Floor, in collaboration with other departments of AIIMS Guwahati
