President of India Felicitates Winners of National Energy Conservation Awards

National Energy Conservation Day 2025 was celebrated today at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, where the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, felicitated the winners of the National Energy Conservation Awards (NECA) 2025 and the National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation 2025.

The event underscored India’s steadfast commitment to advancing energy efficiency, fostering sustainability, and promoting responsible energy use across all sectors of the economy. The event was organised by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power.

The President said that energy conservation is the most reliable and environment-friendly source of energy. Saving energy is equivalent to producing energy, and that too without placing any additional pressure on our natural resources. She noted that as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, India’s rising energy needs—driven by wider electricity access, urbanisation, industrial growth and improved living standards—must be met in a sustainable and responsible manner.

Manohar Lal, Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs said that India has positioned itself at the forefront of the global energy shift, aligning its plans with the goal of limiting the increase in worldwide temperatures to below two degrees Celsius. He noted that India is one of the fastest growing economies having one of the best energy efficiency improvement rate.

The Minister underlined the important role played by the BEE’s initiatives, including the PAT scheme, ADEETIE, Standards & Labelling, and other flagship programmes—in driving energy conservation nationwide. He noted that India’s emissions have risen at a rate much lower than the growth rate of GDP, clearly demonstrating that the country has successfully decoupled economic growth from greenhouse gas emissions.

India is fully committed to achieving its emissions emission reduction. With this goal in mind, the Ministry of Power has notified the Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO). Under the RCO, all Designated Consumers—such as DISCOMs, Captive Power Plants, and Open Access users—must ensure that a minimum portion of their total electricity consumption comes from non-fossil sources.

Minister of State for Power,  Shripad Yesso Naik, in his address, noted that the National Energy Conservation Awards have created a strong tradition of recognizing outstanding efforts in energy conservation. He said that energy conservation isn’t just a matter of technology- it’s also about behaviour change. Turning off a switch, choosing energy efficient appliances, and sustainable actions by citizens can make a huge difference to the cause of energy conservation.

He added that India’s youth is increasingly engaging with the energy conservation movement. The rising awareness among students through schools and colleges shows that this initiative is becoming an integral part of the mindset of a New India.

Secretary, Ministry of Power,  Pankaj Agarwal stated that the visionary leadership of Prime Minister has been central to placing energy efficiency and energy conservation at the core of India’s development model. India’s Energy Security, Green Growth and goals of Viksit Bharat 2047 can be achieved only through judicious use of energy.

Director General, BEE, Dhiraj Kumar Srivastava highlighted the introduction of a new award category for Social Media Influencers and Digital Content Creators, recognising the growing role of digital platforms in enhancing public awareness and engagement on energy efficiency and conservation.
