India’s official stand on the current situation in Bangladesh is one of non-interference in domestic politics, advocating for a return to stability through a free, fair, inclusive, and credible electoral process.
However, relations have become strained due to the deteriorating security situation in Bangladesh, particularly concerning the safety of Indian diplomatic missions and the minority Hindu population.
Key Aspects of India’s Stand:
Call for Stability and Credible Elections:
India has consistently called for peace and stability and supports the aspirations of the people of Bangladesh. New Delhi has conveyed to the interim government that only a “proper caretaker government” and an inclusive election would be acceptable.
Safety Concerns and Diplomatic Action:
India has expressed “strong concerns at the deteriorating security environment” in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh High Commissioner to India was summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to address the activities of extremist elements around the Indian Mission in Dhaka. India temporarily closed some visa application centers for security reasons, though the main one in Dhaka has resumed operations.
Policy is People-Oriented:
The MEA has underlined that its policies are “people-oriented and not aimed at any particular political dispensation”. This is seen as a way to insulate bilateral relations from the recent political upheaval following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Rejection of “False Narrative”:
India has “completely rejected the false narrative sought to be created by extremist elements” regarding certain events and concerns about anti-India sentiment being fueled by radical groups in Bangladesh.
Humanitarian Concerns:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Indian leaders have voiced deep concern over attacks on minority communities, including the Hindu population, and incidents of lynching. A parliamentary panel described the situation as India’s gravest strategic challenge since 1971 due to fears of refugee influx and extremism.
In essence, India is navigating a delicate diplomatic situation, aiming to preserve long-standing strategic, economic, and security ties with Bangladesh while managing significant internal security concerns and the rise of anti-India sentiment among certain factions of the current political landscape.
