BARRACKPORE figures very prominently in the history of freedom movement of India where Mangal Pandey thundered against the tyranny of British rulers in 1857 which finds place in Indian history as Sepoy Mutiny. The oldest Army Cantonment, Barrackpore is also established here in the northern fringe of Kolkata on the Eastern bank of the river Hoogly and Arny Public School, Barrackpore is situated inside the Barrackpore Military Station.
In the wake of the commemoration of a saga of 27 years of glory, today emerged as the day of jollity and mirth with the entire fraternity of Army Public School Barrackpore assembling at Dhyanchand Stadium, Barrackpore Cantonment, to witness the gala extravaganza.
The ground of Dhyan Chand Stadium (RCTC Ground, Barrackpore) was a kaleidoscope of colours and cheers on 24th December, 2025 as the much-anticipated Annual Sports Day of Army Public School Barrackpore unfolded athleticism, unity, a vibrant celebration of healthy competition and school’s spirit among students, teachers and parents.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from students of Classes III to VIII. Olympian Soma Biswas, a distinguished heptathlete, two-time Silver Medalist, Asian Games (Busan 2002 & Doha 2006) and the prestigious Arjuna Awardee, graced the event with her opulent presence as the chief guest alongside Brig. Ashish Hooda SM, Commander 122 Infantry Brigade, Chairman, Army Public School Barrackpore.
The day kicked off with a grand opening ceremony at RCTC ground featuring the ceremonial lighting of the torch, flag hoisting with an inaugural address and releasing a flock of pigeons and balloons into the sky by the Chief Guest.
The programme commenced with a colourful, well-coordinated and disciplined march past by house teams followed by an Oath taken by a student set an energetic tone for the day’s events.The NCC troop of the school too participated in the event and surprised the audience with their skillful performance.
Students showcased incredible talent in track events, including thrilling 75m, 80m, 100m and 200m sprints alongside field events and exhilarating relay races that saw fierce, yet sportsman-like contests between the houses. The competitive spirit was high, but always balanced with sportsmanship, creating an electrifying atmosphere. A particular crowd-pleaser was the younger students’ fun races like the Balance race, Obstacle Race, Biscuit Race, Spoon and Marble Race and Sum Race. Cultural performances, including welcome song and games beat fusion added extra vibrancy to the event.
The fierce 200m sprint was a major highlight, setting a new school record. The relay race witnessed a nail-biting finale, with Manekshaw House clinching victory, showcasing incredible teamwork.Aesthetic Dance including Yoga and Karate added colour and grandeur to the occasion. The school had also made arrangements for refreshments for the participating students.
The day culminated with a prize distribution ceremony where trophies and medals were awarded to the winners, with certificates for all participants by the Chief Guest, who delivered an inspiring speech on the role of sports in building character and fostering teamwork.The Chief Guest also appreciated the high level of discipline and the efficient organization of the event.
House-wise achievements for Classes III to VIII were prominently highlighted during the ceremony. Students from all four houses actively participated and secured positions in various events, reflecting healthy competition and team spirit. Overall House trophies were awarded based on cumulative points earned in different athletic and team events, motivating students to strive for collective excellence.
The Vote of Thanks to everyone for their presence and support, emphasizing how the day reinforced community bonds and the importance of an active lifestyle.The event, then, wrapped up with a mellifluous rendition of National Anthem.

The Annual Sports Day at Army Public School Barrackpore was truly a resounding success, highlighting themes of teamwork, health and community leaving everyone with lasting memories, renewed school spirit and anticipation for the next year. It was not just about winning medals or trophies, but about participation, inclusion, encouragement and celebration of true sportsmanship by giving our best and supporting each other. The experience gained while participating was even more valuable.
