Prashant Tamang, the celebrated singer and actor who won Indian Idol Season 3, passed away at age 43 on January 11, 2026, in New Delhi due to a suspected cardiac arrest.
He was found at his residence and declared dead upon arrival at a Dwarka hospital, leaving the entertainment world in mourning.
He leaves behind wife Geeta Thapa and daughter Ariah Tamang, with his last social media post celebrating her birth.
Tamang rose to fame in 2007 by winning Indian Idol Season 3 with massive support from Darjeeling, Gorkha communities, and Northeast India, defeating finalist Amit Paul.
His debut album Dhanyavaad featured Hindi and Nepali songs, boosting his popularity in eastern India and Nepal.
Fans and industry figures, including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee mourned his loss on social media. In a post on X, CM Banerjee wrote,” Saddened by the sudden and untimely demise today of Prashant Tamang, the popular singer of ‘ Indian Idol’ fame and an artist of national renown.His roots in our Darjeeling hills and one-time association with Kolkata Police made him particularly dear to us in Bengal. I convey my condolences to his family, friends, and countless followers.”
