Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm wishes to citizens across the country on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti, Uttarayan and Magh Bihu, underscoring the festival’s deep cultural and spiritual significance.
In his message, the Prime Minister said Makar Sankranti reflects the richness of India’s age-old traditions and cultural diversity, symbolising harmony, prosperity and the spirit of togetherness.
He expressed hope that the sweetness of til and gur would fill everyone’s lives with happiness, success and good health.
Invoking the blessings of Surya Dev, Modi prayed for the welfare and progress of the nation, noting that the festival marks a time of new beginnings, positivity and renewed energy. He also shared a Sanskrit Subhashitam dedicated to Lord Surya, highlighting the spiritual essence associated with the sun’s northward journey.
Extending greetings on regional harvest festivals celebrated across different parts of the country, the Prime Minister conveyed his wishes on Uttarayan and Magh Bihu as well.
In separate posts on social media platform X, Shri Modi wrote, “Wishing everyone a happy Uttarayan!” and shared messages celebrating the joy and unity brought by these festivals.
Makar Sankranti, celebrated under different names such as Uttarayan in Gujarat and Magh Bihu in Assam, marks the transition of the sun into Capricorn and is observed as a harvest festival across India, symbolising gratitude, hope and collective prosperity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also wishes Pongala “shining symbol of the richness of Tamil traditions,” Mr. Modi extended his “warm Pongal wishes.”
This special festival reminds us of the close relationship between human labour and the rhythms of nature. It is a festival deeply connected with agriculture, our hardworking farmers, rural life and the dignity of work. Families come together to prepare traditional dishes and share joy and goodwill. This strengthens bonds across generations and reinforces the spirit of togetherness. Pongal is also about expressing gratitude to all those who enrich our lives with their hard work.”
Noting that India is home to the the oldest language in the world, Tamil, Mr. Modi said: “It is gladdening to see Pongal emerge as a global festival. It is celebrated enthusiastically in Tamil Nadu, in different parts of India and by the Tamil community across the world.”
