Veterans’ Day was commemorated with solemn dignity and heartfelt gratitude at Tawang on January 14, 2026, as the Tawang Brigade organised a special programme to honour the selfless service and sacrifices of India’s veterans. The event witnessed the participation of large number of proud veterans of the Indian Armed Forces, reaffirming the enduring bond between the Army and its veterans.
The celebrations commenced with a wreath-laying ceremony at the revered Tawang War Memorial, wherein veterans paid homage to the brave martyrs who laid down their lives in the service of the nation. The solemn ceremony evoked deep emotions and served as a reminder of the supreme sacrifices made to safeguard the sovereignty and integrity of India, particularly in the challenging terrain of the Eastern Himalayas.
Following the tribute, an interactive session was organised in which veterans shared inspiring experiences from their distinguished military careers. Their narratives of courage, camaraderie and commitment offered valuable insights and served as a source of motivation for the younger generation.
In a significant step towards veteran welfare, a NAMAN Registration Counter was established during the event to address grievances and concerns of ex-servicemen. Personal attention was given to each veteran, ensuring their issues were heard and appropriate assistance initiated, reflecting the Army’s continued commitment to the well-being of its veterans.
A key highlight of the event was the felicitation ceremony conducted by the Commander, Tawang Brigade. Among those honoured was Ex-Serviceman Nk Tampen Dorjee, presently settled in Shyo village, Tawang. A veteran of the Turtuk sector during Operation Vijay (1999), he has been actively promoting village-based eco-tourism in border areas. As an active member of the Ex-Servicemen Association of Tawang, his eco-tourism model aligns with the Government’s vision of sustainable development in border regions.
Another distinguished veteran felicitated was Ex-Serviceman Nb Sub Tsering Topgyal of Gemkang village, Tawang. A noted social activist, he has dedicated his post-retirement life to the cultivation of medicinal plants and rare species. Renowned for his scientific expertise in grafting and plantation techniques, he has received appreciation from the Government of India, the Governor and Government of Arunachal Pradesh, and the District Administration, Tawang.
The event was further enlivened by a captivating Army Band performance, adding vibrancy and warmth to the celebrations. Veterans also visited the Legendary Major Bob Khathing Museum, where they witnessed the remarkable contributions of Maj Bob Khathing-an illustrious soldier, statesman and visionary leader. Maj Khathing played a pivotal role in the peaceful integration and development of the frontier regions of Arunachal Pradesh and made lasting contributions to nation-building through his administrative acumen and unwavering patriotism.
The Veterans’ Day celebration at Tawang stood as a befitting tribute to those who have served the nation with honour, reinforcing respect, remembrance and responsibility towards India’s veterans.
