Assam researcher and environmentalist receives prestigious Ratan Tata Social Icon of India Award 2026

Known for his community-focused ground-level work in the fields of Environmental sustainability, scientific research, and innovation, Moharana Choudhury of Guwahati city, Assam, has been conferred the prestigious Ratan Tata Social Icon of India Award 2026 at G.I.A. (Gurugram Industrial Association) House, Gurugram, Haryana, India by the National Human Welfare Council.

Indian Researcher and environmentalist Moharana Choudhury has been working on various environmental conservation initiatives in Assam and across the country for more than a decade. He has been working on several initiatives to integrate environmentally sustainable missions for iconic heritage places like Kamakhya Temple, Basistha Temple, Umanada River Island, Chandubi, Son Beel wetlands, and other ecotourism spots in Assam, India, especially to promote cleanliness and hygiene, and to combat single-use plastic pollution.

He is currently a research coordinator in the Environmental Research and Management Division of “Voice of Environment” (A Scientific and Environmental Research Organization) in Guwahati, Assam, India. He contributes to various environmental research, management, social media, mass awareness, and research studies.

He is also well known in India for his efforts to implement environmental education and safeguard the privileges of environmental degree holders. Choudhury has authored or edited more than fifteen (15) books with internationally reputed publishing houses and published more than 100 articles and book chapters in internationally reputed journals, conference proceedings, with a current H-index of 24. On 23rd January 2026, Choudhury was felicitated for his significant contribution to environmental conservation and scientific research along with other awardees from Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, West Bengal, Haryana, Odisha, and many other states of India. Choudhury is the only awardees from the state of Assam and North Eastern India.

He received this award from the Chairman of the Gurugram Industrial Association and the esteemed jury members of the organizing team, along with other esteemed dignitaries, who were present at the event from the media, medical education, scientific, and sports fields. He expressed his gratitude for this felicitation and said it would motivate him and many youths to come forward for more such nation-building initiatives and scientific research in future.
