In a major push for Northeast India’s bamboo economy, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and Communications, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, launched two transformative bamboo projects today at a high-profile ceremony here, organized by the North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC) under the Ministry of DoNER.
The initiatives aim to empower traditional artisans, modernize products, and unlock global markets for the region’s abundant bamboo resources. Speaking at the event, Scindia emphasized bamboo’s potential as a sustainable driver of economic growth, calling it a “green goldmine” for the Northeast.
Key Projects Unveiled the two flagship projects launched are:Strengthening of Traditional Bamboo Artisan Clusters:
This initiative focuses on enhancing market access for artisans, modernizing their products, and integrating them into digital platforms and retail ecosystems. It promises to revive age-old crafts while making them competitive in urban and online markets.
Promotion of Engineered Bamboo Products: Through cluster strengthening and export facilitation, this project will scale up high-value engineered bamboo goods, positioning the Northeast as a hub for innovative, eco-friendly materials.

Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged with e-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart, alongside All Time Plastics. These tie-ups will streamline market integration, boost visibility, and elevate the value chain for bamboo enterprises, from local weavers to exporters.
